Animal Cruelty Prevention – Reporting Animal Neglect
Witnessing animal neglect or abuse can be a heart wrenching experience. For those who love animals it is difficult to understand why it happens. However, no matter if one understands it or not, they have a responsibility to stop or report the abuse if they observe it happening. The key is education on the prevention of cruelty to animals and how to deal with this horrid experience, not only for the animals and their safety, but to make sure that the person committing the crime is punished.
One of the first things that one should do if they witness animal neglect, such as a dog being left on a chain without food, water or shelter, is to report it to their local humane society, the animal control office or the police. They have the authority to actually investigate and find out what is going on inside the home, with regard to the animals living therein. If one is witness to farm animals being mistreated, then they also have a responsibility to see that action is taken to protect the four legged creatures.
If a person lives in a rural area that does not actually have a humane shelter that they can contact, then they should still report the abuse. They can do this by contacting their local police department. They also have the jurisdiction to make sure that the animal laws against cruelty are enforced. Another place to check if one does not feel comfortable contacting the police is a website that can help locate a local animal care organization. Two of these sites are Petfinder.com and Pets911.com.
Animal neglect is a phrase that should be extinct in our modern, enlightened society, yet sadly it is not. However, if one is a witness to animal abuse, then just a phone call can save the life of the animal that is at the mercy of a human abuser. Domesticated animals only wish to make their masters happy, and humans have no right to inflict pain and suffering. For the sake of all animals, report abuses and let the human perpetrators pay for their misdeeds.
