Even though puppy chow and pedigree are cheaper - they're expensive if your dog won't eat it and you end up throwing it away. So, you don't necessarily have to feed him Cesar's Canine Cuisine, but there are lots of quality dog foods out there to choose from. Such as Canidae, Wellness, Taste of the Wild, INNOVA, Blue Buffalo, etc. You may have to pay a little more, but your dog will be getting the protein and minerals he needs instead of a bunch of grains and cereals that will leave him unsatisfied and which he may be allergic to. Many dogs have allergies to all the grains in the cheaper dog foods. Buy a quality dog food that he will eat and you'll be ahead in the long run - both financially and your dog's health.

Purina and Pedigree are not quality dog foods. Get a food with real meat meal and low corn or other starchy filler grains.

If you were given a plate full of McDonalds you would probably devour it too. He eats it quick because it is full of fat and sugar, neither of which he needs. Small dog's teeth rot out really quickly and the worst thing you could do is to give him wet food. Get him on a higher quality dry puppy kibble, one where the first ingredient is Chicken, Beef, Lamb, etc. Neither Purina or Pedigree are very good foods. I feed my dog California Natural, it is more expensive than the other brands, but he eats less because their is better quality food in it. Eating less also equals less poop for you to clean up.

I understand your predicament. Champaigne taste with a beer pocketbook, right? With dog food, you get what you pay for. Simply give your dog the best you can afford and let that be the end of it.

I feed my dog nutro puppy food he is about 10 months old, it is a natural food and he seems to really like it. In the past I have also used Pro Plan and with each of these they have for small breed dogs such as your. It is best to stay away from foods that have a lot of by-products in it. The ones that have a lot of by-products in it do not fill your dog up and they will hungry a couple hours later. It is just like us eating fast food and being hungry in a few hours.

grain-free because dogs cannot digest most grains because they toxify and cause illness and skin disorders.

I feed my dog "Taste of the Wild" and she loves it. It is human grade, meaning it was prepared to the FDA standards that human food has to be (you could eat it). http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/products/

It comes in buffalo, venison, turkey and salmon, I think. It has flax seeds and sweet potatos and berries...(dogs were used in a test on berries and brain health of humans. The scientists found that they prevented alzheimers...but they decided to add it to dog food since it worked so great on the dogs in the clinical trial study)
